If you have fibroids and are thinking about starting a family, you will no doubt be wondering about the potential impact and whether it is possible to have a successful pregnancy with fibroids.

/>

Firstly, as far as conception is concerned, this can be affected by the presence of fibroids. Sometimes, fibroids can block either the cervix or the entrance to the fallopian tubes, both of which can block the passage of sperm and inhibit fertilization.

For the vast majority of women though, fibroids are nothing more than innocent bystanders and the effect they might have depends on:-

* The location of the fibroids
* The size of the fibroids
* How many fibroids you have

With regard to miscarriages, many occur very early on in pregnancy, often before you even know you might be pregnant. In a minority of cases, fibroids can sometimes affect the area where the fertilized egg is implanting in the womb. This is sometimes found to be a cause of previously “unexplained fertility” in a small number of women.

After conception, although the odds of a successful pregnancy with fibroids is high, there are occasions when problems can occur. In the main, fibroids do not grow during pregnancy, although large fibroids might be responsible for some discomfort as the baby grows and conditions in the uterus become more cramped. The location of fibroids can sometimes affect delivery. If a fibroid is located on or near the cervix, then this might mean a cesarean is necessary, but this decision is usually made near to delivery. Occasionally, large fibroids might encourage labor to start early, but fortunately this is not usually early enough to affect the baby.

If you are concerned about whether you can have a successful pregnancy with fibroids, the best thing you can do is to take preventative action to minimize the impact. There are some excellent natural ways of shrinking fibroids which will enhance your overall health and help prepare your body for pregnancy.

The lack of comprehensive “real” help for women led an alternative practitioner to develop a complete system for shrinking fibroids which mirrored what she taught women in her busy clinic.

Her unique, 7 Step Plan has been successfully used by many thousands of women worldwide and for those who are willing to take charge of their own treatment and recognize that they will have to play an active role in their own healing, then this is perfect.

There are many different types of contraceptive available to couples today, and sometimes it is quite difficult to decide which type would be the best for you. The most effective (99%) is the oral contraceptive, and should be prescribed by your doctor or health care specialist.

/>

Whilst oral contraceptive is thought to be the most effective form of birth control, it can have side effects which make it impractical for some people, and if you do decide to use this form of contraception your doctor will need to keep an eye on you with regular check-ups to make sure that all is well. If you suffer any side effects (which can include nausea, sickness, tenderness or swelling in the breasts, dizziness, or irregular breathing) then you must contact your doctor immediately.

Contraceptive implants have become more common in recent years. It takes away the problem of having to remember to take your contraceptive pill every day, and can last for 5 years. It is a small plastic tube which is implanted just beneath the skin in your arm, and gently releases into your system to prevent pregnancy.

Condoms are one of the most common forms of ‘over the counter’ contraceptives and are also advocated for the use of safe sex to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. If used properly they are about 98% effective. These are known as the ‘barrier method’ of contraception, which also includes sponges and diaphragms.

If you are a very methodical person, you may feel happier without the use of chemicals or artificial contraceptives, and decide to rely on using a calendar to record when you are ovulating and when it is a safe time to indulge in sexual activity. This method is probably the least reliable of all, and you should use some sort of barrier method during ovulation.

Of course, for emergencies there is the ‘morning after pill’ which is available to buy at chemists if you are over 16 years of age. This should be used in emergencies only. Remember, having a baby is a decision which should be taken responsibly and at a time in your life when it is right for you and your partner, and should not be an accident due to bad planning or insufficient use of contraceptives.

Talk to your family planning clinic for more information and advice on the different forms of contraception which are available to you.

If given a choice, most women would prefer to know how to naturally shrink fibroids rather than undergoing costly and often painful surgery, which is rarely a permanent cure. Unfortunately, the truth is that unless you remove the root causes of fibroids, they will regrow following conventional treatment.

/>

Fibroids are not usually dangerous or life threatening and this can be both a benefit and, to some extent a drawback. It puts women in the unique position of being able to take their time to consider what to do, but some believe that it also means that fibroids are not taken seriously be the medical profession, who often advocate a “wait and see” approach as fibroids will shrink during the menopause.

Alternative practitioners who can teach women how to naturally shrink fibroids are few and far between and those who are available for consultation tend to be in great demand and consequently charge high fees. This often means that information is sparse and women often find that the information around on the internet is based on anecdotal accounts.

Personally, I had had terrible fibroid symptoms for some time. I had one very large and a few smaller fibroids. I had been given the option of a hysterectomy as my doctor felt there was no alternative but this was the last thing I wanted. I eventually came across some information written by a qualified alternative practitioner who specialized in teaching women how to naturally shrink fibroids.

After a great deal of thought, I gave the system a try. I went into it with my eyes open, with the full knowledge that I would have to do some work myself in terms of making lifestyle and dietary changes. I could not face a hysterectomy, as I was only in my mid thirties yet I could not face these symptoms for the next 10 or 15 years!

At first I found the information overwhelming, yet it all made sense. It did demand commitment and dedication and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that at times I wondered if it was all worth it. However, it wasn’t long before I found out!

Within a month, there was a noticeable reduction in my pain and bleeding and it took another 6 weeks before I could really tell that my abdomen had shrunk. If you decide to learn how to naturally shrink fibroids, then don’t expect a “quick fix”!

The treatment I used is very much “multifaceted” and based around the fact that fibroids form due to the subtle interaction of a number of factors, rather than there being just one cause. Having said this, much fibroid growth is intrinsically linked to estrogen, so one of the starting points is to reduce estrogen levels.

Estrogen is both stored in, and manufactured by fat cells and so reducing the size and number of fat cells is logical. I needed to lose a few pounds, so this aspect of my treatment made me feel pretty good about myself! I embarked on a low-fat diet which was based around organic produce and avoided eating animal fats and red meat. I also drank at least 2 liters of filtered water each day. I upped my exercise level not only to help with weight loss, but one of the treatments is to improve circulation around the abdomen to avoid congestion ( a factor in fibroids). One exercise I enjoyed was rebounding on a mini trampoline-apparently a good way to relieve congestion!

Another treatment I underwent to reduce estrogen was to undergo several liver detoxes over a period of a couple of months. This was because women with fibroids are often found to have estrogen mimicking substances “locked” in the liver which cannot be excreted. These often come from pesticides and environmental toxins.

The lack of comprehensive “real” help for women led an alternative practitioner to develop a complete system for shrinking fibroids which mirrored what she taught women in her busy clinic.

Her unique, 7 Step Plan has been successfully used by many thousands of women worldwide and for those who are willing to take charge of their own treatment and recognize that they will have to play an active role in their own healing, then this is simply ideal.

Some of the most unpleasant side effects of pregnancy can centralise around our legs. Aching, hot and itchy, all three are sensations that you cannot ignore and you probably would not want to either.

So why are my legs bothering me during pregnancy?

The hormones we produce whilst pregnant relax the smooth muscle fibres of your blood vessel walls. This in turn will make your blood circulation slower than usual which leads to leg ache. This can with some women cause hot and itchy legs, and you will most likely find that as your pregnancy progresses the problem will intensify. This is due to your uterus constricting circulation even more as it gains weight.

How can I ease this?

Keep those legs moving! Yes they may ache, but if you spend a lot of time sat down your circulation will only become more sluggish. Take a short walk, flex your ankles and rise up and down on your tiptoes to encourage circulation.

Try not to cross your legs when you sit down. For many of us leg crossing is natural, we don’t even realise we’re doing it. Crossing your legs can also make your circulation sluggish.

When you are laying down, raise your legs so they are slightly elevated by placing a pillow underneath them.

Wear support tights. They may not be very sexy, but they will give your legs the support they need and can also help prevent and assist with varicose veins.

Try a leg cooling cream. Brands such as Burt’s Bees pack their creams with peppermint, which has an instant cooling effect. Alternatively, brands of shower gels such as Original Source also have peppermint filled products, so you can start your day by refreshing your legs in the shower.

Itchy legs can be soothed by adding chamomile lotion to your bath or applying baby oil on a daily basis.

When should I talk to my midwife or doctor?

If your legs begin to swell.

If your legs are persistently and unbearably itchy.

If you experience pain in one leg or the pain intensifies on moving or walking on the leg.

If you have an intense headache or back ache alongside your leg ache.

If your legs develop varicose veins.

More often than not, problematic legs during your pregnancy are just part and parcel of common maternity side effects. Even varicose veins may not be permanent, and will most likely disappear after your pregnancy.

Making life altering decisions can be very difficult. We all have to make decisions every single day of our lives, but there comes a time when we have to make a decision that will alter the course of our life and our family’s lives. One of these decisions is whether or not to have our tubes tied. Tubal ligation surgery is very common these days, but no one ever talks about those women who regret making that decision. For these women, pregnancy after tubal ligation becomes the goal.

/>

Many women go back to their doctors each year after having their tubes tied and let the doctor know that they regret the decision. Their doctor might be sympathetic to their predicament, but they probably don’t have a lot to offer in the way of advice. One common piece of advice would be to go and pursue the option of in vitro fertilization.

However, for most couples IVF is a very expensive proposition. Not only is IVF expensive, but who knows when you will get pregnant and how many cycles it will take to get pregnant. IVF has to be done cycle after cycle, usually, in order to get pregnant as the chances of getting pregnant are so low for each cycle. The costs mount up as do the emotional challenges.

However, there is a surgical option that just may be your best opportunity for a pregnancy after tubal ligation. It is a tubal reversal procedure. This surgery is being done by only a few doctors around the country because it is not being taught in medical school or in the training that residents get afterwards.

This is a sad fact because the procedure is a lot less expensive on average than IVF and allows a woman to try to get pregnant during any month rather than just during a particular cycle. Once a woman has had her tubes untied, she can try to get pregnant anytime she wants.

A woman should speak with her doctor about all of the options available after she has decided to have the procedure reversed. Just like a man can have a vasectomy reversal, a woman can also go that route as well. Pregnancy after tubal ligation is certainly a possibility, but many factors will have to be taken into consideration including the age of the woman and the type of tubal ligation she had in the first place.

Why should I wear a good supportive maternity bra throughout my pregnancy? This is a question I asked myself and no doubt all pregnant women ask too!

During your pregnancy your abdomen and lower rib cage increase in size to allow for the growth of your baby. This will cause the underneath of your breasts to increase during the pregnancy, from the first trimester onwards. You may also find that your breasts will change again when your milk arrives.

You will notice your breasts start changing in preparation for feeding a baby early after conception. Women will often find that their breasts are tender during pregnancy and they may look different also. Your breasts are likely to increase about one cup size during the first trimester and so forth (if you are anything like me, then I grew 3 cup sizes!!)

When I was fitted for my first maternity bra, I was unaware that I needed a well supportive maternity bra. As I got changed and measured for the bra, the shop assistant handed me the bra or what looked similar to a hammock! I put on the maternity bra and realised why I needed one! At first I thought, ‘here we go? But to my surprise, the maternity bra was indeed a hammock, but a sexy, comfortable, and supportive hammock that was value for money - so how could I not resist?

Women have to remember that just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean your underwear has to be any less as sexy as your pre-pregnancy collection! There is some great maternity underwear specialists out there that cater for the smaller or larger breast, such as Amoralia and Pretty Baby Organic Lingerie, both offering a wide variety of styles, colours and sizes!

The thing is what women don’t realise is that a supportive maternity bra is a necessity, not only do you need to be supported for your ever growing breasts, but you need a maternity bra that is not under-wired, this is because it can do damage to your breast ducks resulting in an infection such as mastitis! (And you don’t want that it hurts!)

Here are some tops tips when fitting for a maternity bra:

Ensure the maternity bra is fitted firmly on its tightest fitting so that there is space to grow into as the rib cage expands.

Ensure the breasts are fully covered by the bra cup to support the growing and ever changing breasts. A deep centre on the front of the bra is a good guide to ensure a fuller cup. Even if this is a style you’re not used to you may find it more comfortable with larger and heavier breasts.

Ensure the bra is not pressing or chaffing on the breast tissue. Ensure to check the top of the breast and under the arm especially.

Choose a soft-cup bra rather than one with a wire!

Get re-fitted/checked regularly during pregnancy to ensure the bra is supporting the breasts.
